Rehab/Detox
The idea of going to rehab or detox can be overwhelming for individuals and their families. Supporting the individual is key! Going to rehab or detox is not easy, but it can be a critical part of a person’s treatment journey.
Supporting a loved one to go to rehab or detox can be emotionally taxing, but your encouragement is powerful! Remember rehab or detox is not an instant fix to their substance use addiction but can be a part of some people’s process to get better. Some individuals may need to go multiple times due to relapse and that’s ok!!! Recovery is a lifelong journey.
Have patience, be positive, be encouraging, and assure them that this is meant to help them. Plan out ways you can help support the individual. Can you help pick up their kids from school? Can you bring their spouse a hot meal? Can you offer to help notify their support system?
What is Detox?
What is inpatient rehab?
What is outpatient rehab?
Detox is a process to help a person manage withdrawals from drugs or alcohol safely. Everyone experiences withdrawals differently, the substances they used, the method of use, their amount of use, and their overall health will all contribute to their unique experience.
Detox can be anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks long. Quitting “cold turkey” at home can be dangerous or deadly for a person’s health. Detox often includes medications that reduce withdrawal symptoms. The patient is monitored by health professionals throughout the entire process.
Drugs that are most dangerous to detox from, and often require medication, include alcohol and benzodiazepines. The drugs that are considered the most uncomfortable to detox from are opioids, especially heroin. Going to a detox center is a huge step for both a person’s physical and mental health!
Inpatient rehab is when a person stays at a treatment center, this is a controlled environment in which they go through detox, receive therapy/counseling, and focus on creating a plan on how to remain sober.
The average stay is 30 days, but most addiction treatment facilities offer longer programs (60 days, 90 days, or even longer). The length of treatment depends on several factors, including the severity of the addiction, the existence of any co-occurring mental health conditions, and whether the person has been through rehab before.
Inpatient rehab may be recommended due to the type of drugs used, the severity of one’s addiction, and/or their stage of recovery.
Outpatient rehab programs offer treatment sessions as well as support groups that can be attended at various times throughout the week.
There are generally three types of outpatient programs: day programs, intensive outpatient programs (IOP), or continuing care groups. Day programs and IOPs allow patients to continue with their regular responsibilities and continue living at home, but they are required to check into treatment at their allotted times for counseling and medication. Continuing care groups for example could be attending Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotic Anonymous or other therapeutic groups.
